She spent the next year and a half there writing, recording, and performing before returning to the Northwest to continue her education.
You hear the feelings behind the words and you almost see her facial expressions as she breathes in and out between the verses. Overall, though, my perspective on performing any song is to relate to it in a very personal way.
Around that same time you were nominated by the Independent Music Awards for two songs: That is ultimately the highest calling for me as a music-maker.
I know you like to sing in French, have you tried singing in Japanese.
Monday, June 4, Halie Loren's Heart First on iTunes This one slipped through the cracks for nearly two months, mostly because I received it from Dan Muzquiz of Blackbird Audio Gallery via an iTunes download, and my iTunes account was in a state of disrepair due to neglect and a failure to download any of the updates.
Luckily, I don't think about comparisons too often — otherwise, I'd be terrified to touch the vast majority of the American Songbook, which has been performed by every jazz great in history.
I cannot help, but post this live in studio with good sound: Highly recommended, and still a great antidote to the glossy, too-cool-for-school female vocalists who dot the jazz landscape.
The former featured three original songs by Halie as well as ten other jazz and popular standards.
Halie also writes and performs her own songs, such as the delicate, cello-laced "In Time," which is dedicated to the people of Japan, where she has a huge following. Good luck with the new album and may you continue in your much deserved and hard-earned success.
I've listened to and loved jazz since I was much too young to understand what genres were and why they matter.
On the plus side, of all the CD's this has the most vocal energy and a terrific performance but the best, most demanding parts of Halie's voice are botched by clipping distortion, which is very aggravating.

Halie Loren finds her pocket with the outstanding backing provided by these seasoned musicians. And it is her most cohesive and unified work yet, a unity resulting from artistic openness and authenticity.
They make all her releases, but for some reason they don't do their tricks to improve the SQ. And if you ever want to hear a Neil Young song sound light and whimsical, listen to her version of "Lotta Love. From there, she released a superb live album, Stageswhich found Loren broadening her reach into new musical territory -- including a stunning interpretation of U2's "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and other forays into the broad byways of American popular music.
There's something amazingly alive about that, and it's slightly intoxicating. CD Baby selected it as an Editor's Pick in Octoberwriting that "Her respect for the past is undeniable, while her finger on the pulse of modern music gives her songs a wide appeal that reaches far beyond jazz clubs.
By the age of 14, having moved to Eugene, Oregon, with her family, she was broadening her musical influence and beginning to compose her own award-winning songs. You gotta die awhile to come back a butterfly.
There is fracture here, and heartbreak, an emotional fragility that forever seeks redemption in song and the healing powers of love. This international flavor is also carried over into "C'est Si Bon," which Halie delivers convincingly in French; I've been on a big Serge Gainsbourg kick lately and her sultry voice is an intriguingly sexy counterpoint to Serge's guttural mumblings.
Critical reception was generally positive.
